The Lamplighter

Poor Gertie is found in the snow with a high fever and no one to care for her—except the old lamplighter who lights the street lamps each night. See how God fills the life of this neglected and dejected little girl with hope as she learns to be a virtuous young woman. The Lamplighter is a great book for those who long to remain pure of heart. It left such an impression on my life that I decided to name our ministry Lamplighter Publishing!

In the novel, an afflicted orphan is taken in by a compassionate lamplighter, and, having been lovingly raised and taught virtues and religious faith, blossoms into a moralistic woman. In adulthood she is rewarded for her long suffering with marriage to a childhood friend. Translated into a number of languages, its first decade's sales show it to be second only to Uncle Tom's Cabin in popularity, and outselling The Scarlet Letter ten to one, which added to Hawthorne's resentment of this influential work.

Joel: A Boy of Galilee

See the miraculous events of Jesus, the Nazarene, through the eyes of an ordinary boy who lives among the ordinary fishermen of the day. Having been paralyzed by a bunch of bullies, Joel wonders if he’ll ever walk again. The greater question is, “Can the Healer of Nazareth heal his bitter heart?”

We can say with confidence that this book will draw you closer to the Savior. As Joel puts together the pieces, he realizes that the child, heralded by angels, proclaimed by a star, and worshipped by Magi, is the man who changed the water into wine—his friend of Nazareth and the babe of Bethlehem are the same! That the chosen One could be a friend of his—the thought was too wonderful for him!

John Ploughman's Talk

Picture catching a trout on a sunny day, with pole bowed and line stretched as it breaks through the water. This is how I would describe finding and reading John Ploughman’s Talk. At the very onset there is an exhilarating adrenaline rush that cannot be described. Diving into John Ploughman’s Talk was such an experience, and just knowing that Charles Spurgeon wrote this gem, which is far different than any of his theological writings, makes it even more special.

Though not written for the young, this is a book I would recommend for family devotions. I have chosen this book to be published in a soft Italian leather-tone material, like an old leather glove waiting to be picked up and used over and over again. With each use, it will become more familiar, more pliable, and more cherished.

Little King Davie

This poignant story is a gentle reminder of God’s miraculous love for us. It will inspire every reader to reconsider the special privilege we have as kings, for as Davie learned, every king’s life is to be spent in service for others.

The Legend of the Easter Egg

The Legend of the Easter Egg directs our attention to many a gift of God never noticed by us before and teaches us to be thankful. After reading this inspiring tale, you will never look at a tree, a flower, a butterfly, a blade of grass, or even a common egg in the same way, for as they come forth with new life, we are reminded that our Savior proclaims to us, “I have risen!”

Author: Christoph von Schmid,   Written in: 1816,    Pages: 96

The Inheritance

A faithful grandson seeks to find help for his blind grandfather. When the old man finally opens his eyes, he sees a painting on the wall before him and realizes that this is the very house where he buried a wealthy man’s inheritance fifty years ago. To their surprise, much more is found than earthly treasure!

Author: Christoph von Scmid,   Written in: 1848,   Pages: 192
Ishmael

You will never read a story that is more inspiring and challenging than Ishmael. The heights of success achieved by this young man reveal little of the utter poverty into which he was born. He entered life motherless and poor, and despite the wishes of everyone around, he survived and fl ourished in his paltry environment. His commitment to character and integrity and his singular focus on preserving his mother’s name gave his life focus and purpose. His perseverance and determination to educate himself in law gave him the opportunity to infl uence the highest levels of government. E.D.E.N. Southworth captures the rich panorama of sights and sounds in rural Maryland in the decades prior to the Civil War. When you reach the end, don’t despair!—the drama continues in the sequel, Self Raised!

Author: Mrs. E.D.E.N. Southworth,   Written in: 1876,   Pages: 528
Jessica's First Prayer

Barefoot little Jessica lives in a home where no one knows about God. She looks forward to spending time once a week with Mr. Dan'el, a miserly old coffee peddler who eases his darkened conscience by giving her stale bread and coffee. The House of Love

Aurelia Wilde is cruelly selfish and downright miserable—a victim of her mother's desperate attempts to place her delicate “prized possession” on an unreachable pedestal. But her glory is only surface deep. Aurelia's complaining spirit is a stark contrast to that of her servant-girl, Doris, who knows that in spite of life's troubles, she will one day “dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Her many talents and cheerful disposition cause her to be loved and appreciated, even by the notable residents of Waverly Manor. How jealousy swells within Aurelia's vengeful mother! She'll get even yet…

Author: Elizabeth Cheney,   Written in: 1914,   Pages: 288

The Little Lamb

A family torn asunder by war, an invalid mother, a missing child, and a lost lamb all have one common theme—the innocent sometimes suffer. But in Von Schmid’s unique approach to life and its mysteries, he teaches us all how suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope removes all shame. As the main characters move from the darkness of despair to a hope that is greater than their fears, they soon learn how God can take the most unlikely and innocent of all creatures, a lamb, to bring about the greatest of redemptions and reunions. This is a must read!

Author: Christoph von Schmid,   Written in: 1848,   Pages: 144

Little Threads

It was Mrs. Prentiss' intent that this little gem would be a tool for children to learn obedience. Read about the contrasting lives of Tangle Thread and Golden Thread, one the cause of much grief for her godly mother, and the other the only bright spot in her poor mother's world.

Author: Elizabeth Prentiss,   Written in: 1863,   Pages: 160

The Lost Clue (Leather-bound Edition)

In this intriguing mystery, Captain Fortesque finds himself torn between two loyalties. Having been educated in the finest schools of England, he enjoyed acceptance in high society, but kept his true upbringing a secret. Then the day came that changed the course of his life. It all started with the mysterious note that could only be read after his father’s death. Will he be able to endure the dramatic challenges he will now face?

In the meantime, everything in Daisy Bank seemed crooked and out of shape. Across stretches of dark stagnant water, Marjorie wandered over the wilderness of ashes, wondering how anything could grow in such poor and barren soil. But she learns that even in the midst of that bleak, coal-mining region, she can be ‘a tree of the Lord’s planting,’ bringing sunshine and growth to the dark, dreary world in which she finds herself.

Author: Mrs. O.F. Walton,   Written in: 1907,   Pages: 288

The Lost Ruby

This is the story of young Lieutenant Wildberg and the heavy price he paid for succumbing to the subtle temptation of worldly logic. Though at first his “indiscretion” seemed to accomplish a great and noble good, it eventually brought grief and harm to those he loved. He learned that “even the most trivial lie is an evil seed.” (The second story in this volume is as powerful as The Lost Ruby.)

Author: Christoph von Schmid,   Written in: 1841,   Pages: 120

The Mansion

This little book is a powerhouse, sending a quickening jolt to the very depths of our respectable-looking facade. The Mansion takes a piercing look at John Weightman, one of the most "successful" men in New York, and his son, who desperately wants to find his way and be free to make his own mistakes rather than being played like pieces in a game of chess. The Mansion…it will make you think. An excellent book for fathers of teens!

Mary Jones and Her Bible

In the rugged and meager land of Wales, Mary longs to learn more about the Word of God. This true story takes place in a town where food and clothing are difficult enough to obtain, but young Mary longs for nothing more extravagant than her own Bible. She determines to labor for 6 years selling eggs with the singular focus of obtaining the desire of her heart. As a young woman, she sets out to walk the 25 miles to purchase her Bible—barefoot! The earnest dedication of this child and the testimony of her heart were substantially responsible for the founding of The British and Foreign Bible Society in 1804.

Me and Nobbles
Amy Le Feuvre’s skillful pen creates a most endearing character in Robert Allonby, known as Master Bobby to those of the stuffy old house. With an eager eye fixed on the high road, he waits expectantly for his absent father to return to take him away on adventures around the world. At such a tender age, Bobby learns about the white-robed people that enter through the gates into that eternal city. While his cherished walking stick gets him into much mischief, Bobby thinks often of getting his own robes clean so that he can enter the gates. The eagerness and energy of youth are keen tools for the spread of the Gospel.

When the townspeople of Alverton look upon the little lame boy named David, they have adequate reason to call him “Poor David.” But he is perhaps wealthier than all who look upon him. Though he longs to be physically strong, his friend Arthur teaches him that strength is not only in muscles and bones but also in strength of heart. Just like Sir Galahad of long ago, David’s strength is as the strength of ten because his heart is pure. His pure heart reaps great rewards as he grows to become a highly respected young man.
